Personality and Characteristics of Yorkshire Terriers
Don't let the small size fool you. The Yorkshire Terrier is a dog with the personality of a much larger breed — confident, curious, and full of character. Often described as 'big dogs in small bodies,' Yorkies are one of the most entertaining and rewarding companion dogs you can share your life with.
Size and Appearance
The Yorkie is a toy breed, typically weighing between 3 and 7 pounds (1.4 to 3.2 kg) and standing around 7 to 8 inches at the shoulder. Their most distinctive feature is the long, silky coat that develops into a steel blue and tan colouration in adult dogs. Puppies are born black and tan, with the adult colouring emerging gradually over two to three years. Their small, V-shaped ears stand erect, and their dark, bright eyes give them an alert and intelligent expression.
Temperament
Yorkies are bold and assertive for their size. They investigate new situations readily, are rarely intimidated by larger dogs, and will make their feelings known with a surprisingly loud bark. This feisty spirit is a direct inheritance from their working terrier ancestry. At the same time, Yorkies are intensely loyal and affectionate with their families. They tend to form a particularly close bond with one person and thrive on attention and company. Left alone for long periods, they can become anxious or develop nuisance barking.
Intelligence
Yorkshire Terriers are genuinely intelligent, but that intelligence is paired with a well-known stubborn streak. They learn commands quickly, but will decide for themselves whether obeying is worth their while at any given moment. Consistent, positive training from an early age makes a significant difference.
Adaptability
One of the great strengths of the Yorkie is how adaptable they are. They settle equally well in a city apartment or a house with a garden, provided they receive adequate daily exercise and mental stimulation. Their compact size also makes them practical travel companions.
