Caring for Your Yorkshire Terrier: Exercise and Training
Yorkshire Terriers may be small, but they are far from sedentary. As descendants of working terriers bred for active lives in factories and mines, Yorkies have a naturally energetic and curious character that needs a daily outlet. Providing the right balance of exercise and mental stimulation is essential for a happy, well-behaved Yorkie.
Exercise Needs
Despite their compact size, Yorkies need around 30 to 45 minutes of exercise each day, ideally split across two walks. They enjoy brisk walking, sniffing new environments, and exploring — their terrier instincts make them natural investigators with a surprising amount of stamina. Avoid walking them on very hot pavement, as their small paws are sensitive to heat. A securely enclosed garden or dog park where they can run freely is a valuable supplement to regular leash walks. Many Yorkies also enjoy interactive fetch games and short agility activities.
Mental Stimulation
A bored Yorkie is a destructive Yorkie. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise. Puzzle feeders, interactive toys, and short training sessions all help keep their sharp minds engaged. Rotating toys regularly so they always have something novel to investigate is a simple and effective strategy.
Training
Yorkshire Terriers are intelligent and capable of learning a wide range of commands and tricks, but their terrier independence means they can be selective about when they choose to cooperate. Early socialisation — exposing puppies to different people, environments, sounds, and other animals — is the single most important step in raising a well-rounded adult Yorkie. Positive reinforcement with treats and praise is by far the most effective training approach. Keep sessions short — five to ten minutes — and always end on a success. Harsh corrections are counterproductive and can cause anxiety or increased stubbornness.
House Training
House training tends to take longer with Yorkies than with larger breeds. Patience, consistency, and a crate training approach can make the process significantly smoother. Setting a regular feeding and toilet schedule helps your Yorkie understand what is expected of them.
